STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 26, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --
  * Smart, creative solution for indoor coverage enables superior user experience for Verizon subscribersThe launch of the Ericsson Radio Dot System in Silicon Valley has been greetedwarmly by North American operators who are looking for a smart, creativesolution for indoor coverage that enables a superior user experience.Tom Sawanobori, Vice President of Corporate Technology for Verizon, says:"Verizon looks forward to collaborating with Ericsson to test and trial thisinnovative in-building coverage solution.  The Ericsson Radio Dot system has thepotential to meet customer needs for a flexible, cost effective solution, whilealso allowing for faster deployment."Today the majority of communication is generated indoors, but delivering a greatexperience can be complex and indoor coverage can be challenging. Sometimessignals can be blocked by walls or other obstacles, even by other signals. Thatcauses data throughput to suffer, and user experience declines.In-building solutions need to be an extension of existing networks withintegrated 3GPP and WiFi, enabling a seamless end user experience. EricssonRadio Dot System is a minimalist small cell radio that will fully integrate withmacro mobile networks and leverage existing indoor wiring and outdoor cellularinfrastructure.Dots are connected and powered via standard internet LAN cables (Category5/6/7) to indoor radio units that link to a base station. Radio Dot Systemleverages the same industry-leading features found in Ericsson's macro basestation. Deployments and upgrades are simple, addressing growing capacity andcoverage requirements. Thus the users' experience is consistent wherever they goand the indoor network evolves in lockstep with the outdoor network. EricssonRadio Dot System supports integration with Ericsson's carrier Wi-Fi portfolioenabling features such as real-time traffic steering to ensure the best userexperience across both Wi-Fi and 3GPP networks.Johan Wibergh, head of Ericsson Business Unit Networks, says: "Leading operatorsare focusing on indoor capacity as an opportunity to address the mobile datademands of their customers and expand their enterprise opportunities.  We sawthere was a gap. Today's indoor solutions do not address the vast range ofpublic venues and enterprise buildings that operators are targeting.  With theRadio Dot System, we've filled this gap and redefined the small cell market."The product will continue to be tested in live environments with operators, withexpected commercial availability in late 2014.NOTES TO EDITORSIn-building solutions videoRadio Dot System videoPhotos of Ericsson Radio Dot System:Media kit: Download high-resolution photos, infographics and broadcast-qualityvideo at and information about the product.Download high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video is a world-leading provider of communications technology and services. We are enabling the Networked Society with efficient real-time solutions thatallow us all to study, work and live our lives more freely, in sustainablesocieties around the world. Our offering comprises services, software and infrastructure within Informationand Communications Technology for telecom operators and other industries.
