Dow Today: Boeing (BA) Leads The Day Higher, Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) Lags

The Dow component that led the way higher today was Boeing (NYSE: BA), which sported a $1.66 gain (+1.6%) bringing the stock to $104.93. This single gain is lifting the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 12.56 points or roughly accounting for 78.5% of the Dow's overall gain. Volume for Boeing ended the day at three million shares traded vs. an average daily trading volume of 5.3 million shares.

Boeing has a market cap of $79.62 billion and is part of the industrial goods sector and aerospace/defense industry. Shares are up 37% year to date as of Wednesday's close. The stock's dividend yield sits at 1.8%.

Holding the Dow back today was Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM), which lagged the broader Dow index with a $1.57 decline (-1.8%) bringing the stock to $87.27. Volume for Exxon Mobil Corporation ended the day at 10.6 million shares traded vs. an average daily trading volume of 12.4 million shares.

Exxon Mobil Corporation has a market cap of $383.34 billion and is part of the basic materials sector and energy industry. Shares are up 0.3% year to date as of Wednesday's close. The stock's dividend yield sits at 2.9%.

Exxon Mobil Corporation engages in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas, and manufacture of petroleum products. The company also transports and sells crude oil, natural gas, and petroleum products. It has approximately 37,228 gross and 31,264 net operated wells.

The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its attractive valuation levels and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had sub par growth in net income.
