Zillow Inc (Z): Today's Featured Real Estate Winner

Zillow ( Z) pushed the Real Estate industry higher today making it today's featured real estate winner. The industry as a whole closed the day down 1.5%. By the end of trading, Zillow rose $3.04 (3.5%) to $91.22 on average volume. Throughout the day, 677,348 shares of Zillow exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 722,400 shares. The stock ranged in a price between $88.61-$92.62 after having opened the day at $89.70 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $88.18. Other companies within the Real Estate industry that increased today were: Texas Pacific Land ( TPL), up 5.6%, ZipRealty ( ZIPR), up 3.8%, Nationstar Mortgage Holdings ( NSM), up 3.1% and Power REIT ( PW), up 3.0%.

Zillow, Inc. engages in the operation of a real estate and home-related information marketplace on mobile and the Web in the United States. Zillow has a market cap of $2.6 billion and is part of the technology sector. Shares are up 217.8% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday. Currently there are 2 analysts that rate Zillow a buy, no analysts rate it a sell, and 4 rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates Zillow as a hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its robust revenue growth, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures and solid stock price performance. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including deteriorating net income, disappointing return on equity and weak operating cash flow.

On the negative front, Five Oaks Investment ( OAKS), down 6.2%, JAVELIN Mortgage Investment ( JMI), down 6.0%, Homex Development ( HXM), down 5.9% and Owens Realty Mortgage ( ORM), down 5.9% , were all laggards within the real estate industry with American Tower ( AMT) being today's real estate industry laggard.

For investors not wanting singular stock exposure, ETFs may be of interest. Investors who are bullish on the real estate industry could consider iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate ( IYR) while those bearish on the real estate industry could consider ProShares Short Real Estate Fund ( REK).
