Throughout the day, 8,055,280 shares of Southwest Airlines exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 7,140,400 shares. The stock ranged in a price between $13.16-$13.80 after having opened the day at $13.43 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $13.40. Southwest Airlines has a market cap of $9.7 billion and is part of the services sector. Shares are up 30.9% year to date as of the close of trading on Tuesday. Currently there are 7 analysts that rate Southwest Airlines a buy, 2 analysts rate it a sell, and 3 rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates Southwest Airlines as a buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures, notable return on equity and solid stock price performance. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company shows weak operating cash flow.

On the negative front, Marten Transport ( MRTN), down 6.2%, FreeSeas ( FREE), down 5.4%, Patriot Transportation Holdings ( PATR), down 3.7% and Air Methods ( AIRM), down 3.0%.

For investors not wanting singular stock exposure, ETFs may be of interest. Investors who are bullish on the transportation industry could consider iShares Dow Jones Transportation ( IYT) while those bearish on the transportation industry could consider ProShares UltraShort Industrials ( SIJ).
