AT&T ( T) pushed the Telecommunications industry higher today making it today's featured telecommunications winner. The industry as a whole closed the day down 0.3%. By the end of trading, AT&T rose $0.60 (1.7%) to $35.67 on heavy volume. Throughout the day, 40,210,779 shares of AT&T exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 24,879,000 shares. The stock ranged in a price between $35.15-$35.86 after having opened the day at $35.19 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $35.07. Other companies within the Telecommunications industry that increased today were: Oi ( OIBR), up 20.7%, WPCS International ( WPCS), up 11.0%, Net Element International ( NETE), up 10.4% and Otelco Inc. Class A ( OTEL), up 7.3%.

AT&T Inc. provides telecommunications services to consumers, businesses, and other providers in the United States and internationally. The company operates in three segments: Wireless, Wireline, and Other. AT&T has a market cap of $188.2 billion and is part of the technology sector. The company has a P/E ratio of 26.5, above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Shares are up 4.0% year to date as of the close of trading on Monday. Currently there are 6 analysts that rate AT&T a buy, 2 analysts rate it a sell, and 21 rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates AT&T as a buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its growth in earnings per share, expanding profit margins, good cash flow from operations, increase in net income and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. Although no company is perfect, currently we do not see any significant weaknesses which are likely to detract from the generally positive outlook.

On the negative front, ARC Group Worldwide ( ARCW), down 8.9%, Ubiquiti Networks ( UBNT), down 8.0%, Parametric Sound ( PAMT), down 6.4% and Ambient Corporation ( AMBT), down 5.9% , were all laggards within the telecommunications industry with Mobile Telesystems OJSC ( MBT) being today's telecommunications industry laggard.

For investors not wanting singular stock exposure, ETFs may be of interest. Investors who are bullish on the telecommunications industry could consider iShares Dow Jones US Telecom ( IYZ) while those bearish on the telecommunications industry could consider ProShares Ult Sht Telecommunication ( TLL).
