Akamai Technologies ( AKAM) pushed the Internet industry lower today making it today's featured Internet laggard. The industry as a whole closed the day down 0.1%. By the end of trading, Akamai Technologies fell 38 cents (-1.1%) to $35.41 on light volume. Throughout the day, 2.2 million shares of Akamai Technologies exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of four million shares. The stock ranged in price between $35.21-$35.89 after having opened the day at $35.71 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $35.79. Other companies within the Internet industry that declined today were: Deltathree ( DDDC), down 30%, MeetMe ( MEET), down 5%, CGI Group ( GIB), down 3.8%, and Jiayuan.com International Ltd ADR ( DATE), down 3.7%.

Akamai Technologies, Inc. provides content delivery and cloud infrastructure services for accelerating and improving the delivery of content and applications over the Internet in the United States and internationally. Akamai Technologies has a market cap of $6.43 billion and is part of the technology sector. The company has a P/E ratio of 32.2, above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Shares are down 11.9% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday. Currently there are 13 analysts that rate Akamai Technologies a buy, no analysts rate it a sell, and eight rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates Akamai Technologies as a buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its growth in earnings per share, increase in net income, robust revenue growth, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures and reasonable valuation levels. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had lackluster performance in the stock itself.

On the positive front, Bankrate ( RATE), up 12.6%, LiveDeal ( LIVE), up 6.7%, Youku Tudou ( YOKU), up 3.6%, and LookSmart ( LOOK), up 3.4%, were all gainers within the internet industry with Groupon ( GRPN) being today's featured internet industry leader.

For investors not wanting singular stock exposure, ETFs may be of interest. Investors who are bullish on the internet industry could consider First Trust Dow Jones Internet Idx ( FDN) while those bearish on the internet industry could consider ProShares Ultra Short Technology ( REW).
