AKRON, Ohio, April 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) today announced that David J. Karafa, formerly regional president, Ohio Edison, has been promoted to president, Pennsylvania Operations, where he will oversee Metropolitan Edison (Met-Ed), Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec), Pennsylvania Power (Penn Power) and West Pennsylvania Power. He succeeds Douglas S. Elliott, who has elected to retire after more than 35 years with the company. The change will be effective May 13, 2013. Karafa joined the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company in 1981 in the Production Engineering department and held various positions before being promoted to Overhead Line supervisor in 1997. In 1999, he was named manager, Underground Services, and in 2002 promoted to director, Operations Services, at Jersey Central Power & Light. In 2005, he was named director, Energy Delivery Performance & Process Improvement for FirstEnergy, and in 2008 led a company-wide work management improvement program. Karafa was promoted to regional president at Met-Ed in 2011, and named regional president, Ohio Edison, the following year. He previously was manager for the Eastern Region of Ohio Edison, vice president of Sales, Marketing and Energy Services for FirstEnergy, senior vice president for Retail Operations for FirstEnergy Solutions, and senior vice president of the Customer Service and Service Area Development Group. He was named president, Pennsylvania Operations, in 2005.
