5 Absolutely Annoying Things About Apple

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Even though I think it's high time for Apple (AAPL) to take a long, hard look at Tim Cook, I love this company.

No need for objectivity here. I love Apple. I want it to do well. I want the stock to go up. Don't tell her, but I spent more money on Apple products over the last year than I did on my wife. In many ways, Apple products have become an obsession. But, not surprisingly, it's a love-hate relationship. There are things about Apple I just cannot stand.

Apple can get away with a Dead Sea scrolls-sized package of pet peeves simply because . . . it's Apple. At least it can get away with it for now. But, sooner or later, the warts will matter more. The longer we go with apologies and talk about hiking the dividend to boost the stock price instead of new product innovation, the more we'll watch Apple's mindshare shrink. Investors, for all intents and purposes, have already stopped giving the company the benefit of the doubt.

So, from big to small, here are the things that annoy me most about Apple.

Steve Jobs Is Dead

That may sound crass, but I mean with 100% genuine respect. Half of the seemingly inane conversations we've been having about this company would not be taking place if a.) Steve Jobs did not get sick and b.) his condition did not progress to its ultimately incurable state.

Yes, it's even more sad for his family and friends. I shouldn't have to qualify the obvious, but I feel the need. And, speaking of crass but brutally honest, I guess MacDailyNews has a point:
If Steve Jobs were alive it would be because he listened to his doctors and had his cancer cut out the day it was luckily discovered, not after dicking around with a Veg-O-Matic for nine months and likely letting it metastasize to ultimately fatal consequence. In other words, Jobs wasn't an all-knowing God, just a partially knowing one. He wasn't perfect; nobody is (look in the mirror right now, Rocco).

OK. So it's not all "seemingly inane."


And I don't mean the typical undefined claims arrogance haters like to throw at Apple. I'm getting specific.

I'm tired of this hipster cool notion that Apple is a software company, not a hardware company. Doesn't matter if it's David Einhorn saying it or Tim Cook. It's a bunch of malarkey.

Apple generates the vast majority of its revenue from hardware sales. In recent history, you really cannot find anything labeled fail from Apple with respect to hardware. But, man, when you open it up to everything else, you see complete and total disasters (think Ping), near-disasters that Cook had to scramble to salvage (think Apple Maps) and platforms that receive loads of criticism, such as iTunes.

That doesn't happen with Apple's bread and butter -- beautifully designed, high-quality, premium-priced, incredibly useful and stylish hardware.


That segues nicely to a concern I have been raising of late: Apple risks becoming average and losing focus if it decides to start chasing after leaders from other spaces, particularly Pandora ( P).

That ties into the notion that you don't want -- at least I don't want -- people at Apple thinking they work for a software company. Talk about creating a false culture where the rank and file loses focuses and Rome falls.


Speaking of an Apple non-hardware initiative: Does iMessage ever work? I have seen Sent as text message quite a bit these days on my iPhone 5.


Have you ever made an appointment at the Genius Bar inside an Apple Store? Has Apple ever taken you on time for an appointment at the Genius Bar? They're worse than the cable company in that regard. They give good service, but man, they treat you like they're doing you a favor. Like you're a red-headed stepchild.
