Pope Francis' First Day: Hot Trends

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Popular searches on the Internet include Pope Francis as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church begins his first day on the job Thursday.

The new pontiff began his day with private prayers at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome before returning to the Vatican. It is expected that he will hold an inaugural Mass in the Sistine Chapel on Thursday.

Pope Francis, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, is an Argentine and the first non-European to be elected pope in 12 centuries. He is also the first member of the Jesuit order chosen for the position. Pope Francis finished second in voting when Benedict XVI, now pope emeritus, was elected in 2005.

Francis faces challenges in his new position as the Catholic Church has been plagued by sexual abuse scandals and allegations of mismanaging finances.

Francis was born to Italian immigrants and raised in Buenos Aires. He is known for embracing the poor, demonstrated through his choice of name. He is the first pope to take the name Francis, in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, a servant to the poor and an admirer of nature.

McDonald's ( MCD) is trending as the fast food restaurant chain announced it will be adding an egg-white breakfast sandwich to its menu at all U.S. locations.

The company is increasing its efforts to promote healthier food to meet demand for more nutritious items. The new "Egg White Delight" will consist of a whole grain muffin, extra-lean Canadian bacon and white cheddar cheese, and will be 250 calories. A regular Egg McMuffin contains 300 calories. The sandwich will be available beginning April 22.

Customers will be able to request egg whites for other breakfast sandwiches as well.

McDonald's said on March 8 that sales at stores open at least 13 months fell 3.3% in February. The company has been adding other types of new items, like Fish McBites and chicken wings, to its menu in effort to lure in consumers. McDonald's plans to add a blueberry-pomegranate smoothie to its menu on May 15, and also plans to add new types of wraps later this month.

BlackBerry ( BBRY) is another popular search. A new popular app becomes available for users of the BlackBerry 10 device on Thursday.

BlackBerry 10 users can officially download the WhatsApp Messenger application, which allows users to exchange messages without having to pay SMS fees. The app uses the same mobile Web connectivity used for checking email and browsing the Web. This comes in handy particularly when users are communicating with one another internationally.

According to BlackBerry, the app demonstrates the BlackBerry 10's multitasking abilities -- using "real-time push notifications" to alert users of messages even when the device's screen is locked. There's also tight integration with BlackBerry Contacts so users can start messaging people right off the bat.

The app is available for download via BlackBerry World.
