LinkedIn Corp (LNKD): Today's Featured Internet Winner

LinkedIn ( LNKD) pushed the Internet industry higher today making it today's featured internet winner. The industry as a whole closed the day up 0.4%. By the end of trading, LinkedIn rose $3.27 (1.9%) to $179.27 on average volume. Throughout the day, 2.3 million shares of LinkedIn exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 2.3 million shares. The stock ranged in a price between $174.30-$181.45 after having opened the day at $176.01 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $176. Other companies within the Internet industry that increased today were: Remark Media ( MARK), up 13.6%, LookSmart ( LOOK), up 11.2%, Yelp Inc Class A ( YELP), up 5.4%, and Global Sources ( GSOL), up 5.3%.

LinkedIn Corporation operates an online professional network. LinkedIn has a market cap of $15.85 billion and is part of the technology sector. The company has a P/E ratio of 932, above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Shares are up 53.3% year to date as of the close of trading on Tuesday. Currently there are 12 analysts that rate LinkedIn a buy, no analysts rate it a sell, and 14 rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates LinkedIn as a sell. The area that we feel has been the company's primary weakness has been its disappointing return on equity.

On the negative front, Jiayuan.com International Ltd ADR ( DATE), down 5.7%, Vipshop Holdings Ltd ADR ( VIPS), down 5.5%, SouFun Holdings ( SFUN), down 4.2%, and ClickSoftware Technologies ( CKSW), down 4.1%, were all laggards within the internet industry with Qihoo 360 Technology ( QIHU) being today's internet industry laggard.

For investors not wanting singular stock exposure, ETFs may be of interest. Investors who are bullish on the internet industry could consider First Trust Dow Jones Internet Idx ( FDN) while those bearish on the internet industry could consider ProShares Ultra Short Technology ( REW).
