5 Apps for TV Lovers

NEW YORK TheStreet -- From Downton Abbey to Keeping Up With The Kardashians, there's something for everyone on TV these days. And ever since the advent of digital video recording (DVR), you don't have to miss a thing.

Now you can watch your favorite show via TV, laptop, or Apple's ( AAPL) iPad. Or all of the above.

There are also apps to help you maximize your viewing experience. Find out where and when to watch. Talk about the latest new episodes with your friends. Joan Rivers said what?! on Fashion Police.

Here's the word on The Street. These are the five best apps for TV lovers.

Fanhattan

Calling all TV fans (and movie fans, too), Fanhattan is your one-stop shop for finding your favorite programs. Users can search for their favorite show, and then connect via Netflix ( NFLX), Hulu, iTunes and more. Fanhattan will alert you when it's time for Real Housewives of Beverly Hills so there's no need to keep track of schedules. You'll be the first of your friends to know about Kim's new nose. Yay!

Fanhattan also allows the user to see what their friends are watching, and the actors, too. Courteney Cox watches Seinfeld. I always knew I liked her!

This free app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, but requires iOS 5.1 or later.

Zeebox

Zeebox is your social TV guide. Chat with your friends when you're deciding what to watch tonight on TV. Did you see who Piers Morgan booked tonight? Hear what your friends out in LA think about Entourage.

You'll never miss your favorite shows with Zeebox. Use the "bookings" section to set alarms. See what others have on their lists, too. Apparently, American Idol is still a thing these days.

See what shows are trending. According to Zeebox, the Chicago Fire audience is "simmering" tonight. Go figure.

This free app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, but requires iOS 5.0 or later. It is also available for Google's ( GOOG) Android.

yap.TV

Uh, Saturday Night Live with Justin Timberlake just happened; along with Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Jay-Z. Hello, best SNL ever. If you were using Yap.TV, you would have caught all the tweets about JT. You also could have yapped with your SNL-loving friends.

Users can check out the TV Feed and see photos from the dress rehearsal and a reunion photo of the original SNL greats. I think Jennifer Lawrence is going to be an awesome host next week. There's also the ability to sync with your Facebook ( FB) account, and see what your friends "like" to watch. 119 of my friends watch The Office. I knew I had the right friends.

This free app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, but requires iOS 5.0 or later.

GetGlue

GetGlue is like the Foursquare for TV. This social media network allows you to "check-in" to the shows you're watching. Just like with yap.TV, you can sync GetGlue with Facebook, allowing it to keep track of the schedules for all of your "likes." The guide allows you to see what your friends "like," too.

GetGlue offers rewards for watching TV. Users can earn stickers, such as the "Couch Potato," and more.

This free app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, but requires iOS 5.0 or later. It's also out for Android.

Viggle

If you're a true couch potato, then "checking in" is way too much effort. Lucky for you, Viggle will use the audio from your TV to check-in for you. How did Viggle know that Joel McHale's voice was on The Soup and not Community?

See what everyone is saying about the show on Twitter. Look at the page on IMDB. You then have the ability to buy the episodes on iTunes. Viggle also offers a feature, named chatter, that allows you to message friends. Tell them how you really feel about the last episode of Gossip Girl.

The best thing about Viggle is you can earn TV-watching points and redeem them for real-life rewards. A Starbucks ( SBUX) gift card for watching Millionaire Matchmaker? Working has never been so easy.

This free app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and comes on Android as well. --Written by Katie Roof in New York
