NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Astronics Corporation (Nasdaq: ATRO) has been upgraded by TheStreet Ratings from hold to buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures and increase in net income. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company shows low profit margins.

Highlights from the ratings report include:
  • ATRO's revenue growth has slightly outpaced the industry average of 6.5%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues rose by 10.2%. This growth in revenue does not appear to have trickled down to the company's bottom line, displayed by a decline in earnings per share.
  • ATRO's debt-to-equity ratio is very low at 0.24 and is currently below that of the industry average, implying that there has been very successful management of debt levels. Along with the favorable debt-to-equity ratio, the company maintains an adequate quick ratio of 1.10, which illustrates the ability to avoid short-term cash problems.
  • The net income growth from the same quarter one year ago has exceeded that of the S&P 500 and the Aerospace & Defense industry average. The net income increased by 9.4% when compared to the same quarter one year prior, going from $5.17 million to $5.66 million.
  • ASTRONICS CORP's earnings per share declined by 7.5% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company has suffered a declining pattern of earnings per share over the past year. However, we anticipate this trend reversing over the coming year. During the past fiscal year, ASTRONICS CORP reported lower earnings of $1.55 versus $1.76 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($1.83 versus $1.55).
  • Reflecting the weaknesses we have cited, including the decline in the company's earnings per share, ATRO has underperformed the S&P 500 Index, declining 24.03% from its price level of one year ago. Turning toward the future, the fact that the stock has come down in price over the past year should not necessarily be interpreted as a negative; it is one of the factors that makes this stock an attractive investment.
.

Astronics Corporation, through its subsidiaries, designs and manufactures products for the aerospace and defense industries worldwide. It operates in two segments, Aerospace and Test Systems. The company has a P/E ratio of 18.6, above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Astronics has a market cap of $308 million and is part of the industrial goods sector and aerospace/defense industry. Shares are up 17.8% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday.
