NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- In the battle for e-reader supremacy, this was a make or break quarter for Barnes & Noble's ( BKS) Nook, Jim Cramer told Debra Borchardt at TheStreet.com Thursday.

But after the company reported disappointing sales of the device, he said it will likely be impossible for the bookseller to recover.

"Sometimes the best device doesn't win," Cramer continued, noting that based purely on specs and customer reviews, the Nook outshines that of Amazon.com's ( AMZN) Kindle line of products. But in the end, the Nook is just part of an ailing bookseller, while Kindle is part of Amazon's e-commerce juggernaut.

Sales of e-readers have all gone to Amazon, he said, while makes the likelihood of a Barnes & Noble takeover less and less likely.
