Apple's Top 10 Free Apps of 2012

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Apple ( AAPL) published its list of the top 10 apps of 2012, ranging from a wide variety of categories, including games, social networking, music, movies to even utility tools.

Here are the top 10 free apps in 2012, according to Apple.

Instagram, the popular photo social network, was the No. 1 app this year. It became so popular that Facebook ( FB) eventually bought Instagram.

Only behind Instagram, Facebook was another popular app this year, as more people continue to use social networking for communication. Facebook held its IPO in 2012, raising more than $16 billion in the offering.

Draw Something

Draw Something, the popular game now owned by Zynga ( ZNGA), was the top gaming app of 2012. Zynga recently wrote down its acquisition of OMGPOP, the maker of Draw Something.

Apple and Google ( GOOG) have had a tumultuous relationship in 2012, and that may have led to the decision for Apple not to include YouTube in its new mobile operating system, iOS 6. Google eventually released a new app for iOS.

Temple Run

Temple Run is a running game that allows you to race down ancient temple walls and along sheer cliffs. You collect coins and buy power ups while you're running, jumping and avoiding obstacles. The trick is to see how far you can run.

Pandora Radio

Pandora Radio ( P) is the top music app for Apple, with millions of listeners. Pandora's stock hasn't performed well this year, however, as it has fallen 14% year to date.

Flashlight does exactly what you think it does. It turns your iPhone into a flashlight, by keeping the back camera light open. It's a great app to have, but you have to watch the battery usage on it.

Facebook Messenger

Another Facebook app is one of the top apps for iOS this year, with Facebook Messenger joining the list. With the app, you can message a friend or start a group conversation, get push notifications, know who has seen your messages and include your location and share photos.

Twitter is another major social network that's one of the top 10 free apps of 2012. I predicted that Twitter files to go public in 2013, with an actual IPO happening in 2014.

Pinterest, the popular photo-centric social network, is also on Apple's list of top free apps. In May, the San Francisco-based Pinterest raised $100 million, giving it an implied valuation of $1.5 billion.
