Each year, the award honors one woman in Maine for her strong leadership success, commitment to the local community and portrayal as an exemplary role model for girls and young women.

Past recipients of the award include Senator Olympia Snowe and Olympic Gold Medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson. “We are thrilled to name Melissa as this year’s ‘Woman of Distinction’,” said Joan McDonald, CEO of Girl Scouts of Maine. “Her strong leadership skills, accomplished career path and dedication to the local community serve as a wonderful example to the young women of Maine.” Smith currently serves on the Center for Grieving Children's board of directors, is a co-founder of the Executive Women's Forum, volunteers for the Maine Cancer Foundation's Tri for a Cure, and helped to create sheJAMs, an organization bringing together women of all ages and abilities who enjoy being active. In August of this year, Smith was selected by Mainebiz as one of its “2012 Women to Watch.”
