PECO Readies System To Meet Customer Demands This Winter

With colder weather just around the corner, PECO is nearly complete with the work necessary to ready its electric and natural gas system to ensure safe and reliable service for customers all winter long. This work helps ensure PECO is ready for the increased demand for natural gas that normally comes with winter weather, and to enhance electric distribution reliability and natural gas pipeline safety.

In a major component of its winter readiness work, PECO has secured its natural gas supply and completed filling its natural gas storage facilities to serve its more than 494,000 natural gas customers this heating season. To ensure supply and hedge against price fluctuations, PECO buys and stores about a third of its winter gas supply during the non-heating months.

As part of nearly $80 million the company is investing in its natural gas system this year, PECO has completed more than 25 capacity expansion projects, which included the replacement of about 25,000 feet of smaller underground gas main with larger diameter gas mains to handle increased load and pressure to meet the growing needs of customers. The company also completed 125 projects to replace more than 131,000 feet of cast iron and bare steel gas lines with plastic gas mains, which are more durable, easier to maintain, and more reliable.

“We are constantly investing in our system to ensure we meet the needs of our customers and to ensure we provide the reliable electric and natural gas service our customers have come to expect,” said Craig Adams, PECO President and CEO. “As we work to prepare for colder weather, we encourage our customers to do the same, by inspecting heating equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.”

Before overnight temperatures begin to routinely dip into the 30s, PECO advises area homeowners to turn on their heaters and test the system to avoid any operating issues when it's really needed. As customers turn their home heating systems on, many report indoor gas odors or appliance malfunction. PECO also encourages customers to schedule a service call for their heater if the system hasn't been inspected and cleaned by a qualified service technician in the past two years. Regular service will ensure the heating system will operate safely and efficiently for the heating system ahead.
