Anadarko Petroleum ( APC) pushed the Basic Materials sector higher today making it today's featured basic materials winner. The sector as a whole closed the day up 1.1%. By the end of trading, Anadarko Petroleum rose $1.68 (2.4%) to $70.82 on light volume. Throughout the day, 2.8 million shares of Anadarko Petroleum exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of four million shares. The stock ranged in a price between $69.44-$70.89 after having opened the day at $69.61 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $69.14. Other companies within the Basic Materials sector that increased today were: Quaterra Resources ( QMM), up 14.1%, OM Group ( OMG), up 12.8%, Minco Gold Corporation ( MGH), up 12%, and Timberline Resources Corporation ( TLR), up 9.5%.

Anadarko Petroleum Corporation engages in the exploration, development, production, and marketing of natural gas, crude oil, condensate, and natural gas liquids(NGLs) in the United States, Algeria, and internationally. Anadarko Petroleum has a market cap of $34.57 billion and is part of the energy industry. Shares are down 9.4% year to date as of the close of trading on Monday. Currently there are 21 analysts that rate Anadarko Petroleum a buy, no analysts rate it a sell, and four rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates Anadarko Petroleum as a hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its good cash flow from operations, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures and expanding profit margins. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including deteriorating net income, disappointing return on equity and feeble growth in the company's earnings per share.
