NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Annaly Capital Management (NYSE: NLY) has been downgraded by TheStreet Ratings from buy to hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, reasonable valuation levels and good cash flow from operations. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including deteriorating net income, disappointing return on equity and relatively poor performance when compared with the S&P 500 during the past year.

Highlights from the ratings report include:
  • NLY's revenue growth trails the industry average of 19.1%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly increased by 1.6%. This growth in revenue does not appear to have trickled down to the company's bottom line, displayed by a decline in earnings per share.
  • Net operating cash flow has increased to -$1,305.68 million or 49.32% when compared to the same quarter last year. Despite an increase in cash flow, ANNALY CAPITAL MANAGEMENT's cash flow growth rate is still lower than the industry average growth rate of 59.33%.
  • The company, on the basis of change in net income from the same quarter one year ago, has significantly underperformed when compared to that of the S&P 500 and the Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) industry. The net income has significantly decreased by 175.4% when compared to the same quarter one year ago, falling from $120.82 million to -$91.16 million.
  • Return on equity has greatly decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a signal of major weakness within the corporation. Compared to other companies in the Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) industry and the overall market on the basis of return on equity, ANNALY CAPITAL MANAGEMENT underperformed against that of the industry average and is significantly less than that of the S&P 500.
