Morning Briefing: 10 Things You Should Know

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- U.S. stock futures were pointing to gains on Wall Street Monday, while Asian stocks closed the session with losses after a survey in Japan showed confidence in the economy weakening.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index shed 0.8% to finish at 8,796.51.

European stocks were posting gains in early trading on Monday.


The economic calendar in the U.S. Monday includes the Institute for Supply Management's September manufacturing index and August construction spending, both due to be released at 10 a.m. EDT.


U.S. stocks fell on Friday, ending the third quarter on a down note as investors wrestled with weak reports on consumer confidence and the manufacturing sector.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 49 points, or 0.36%, to close at 13,437. The Dow gained 4.3% in the third quarter.


The board of miner Xstrata recommended shareholders accept terms of the $33 billion merger with Swiss commodities trader Glencore.

The deal creates a mining giant with revenue of around $175 billion.


Nokia ( NOK) on Monday plans to announce a deal with Oracle ( ORCL) that will give Oracle customers access to Nokia's mapping and location services, according to a report.

The Finnish cell phone maker plans to make the announcement at the OracleWorld conference in San Francisco, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.


The earnings calendar Monday includes reports from Cal-Maine Foods ( CALM) and

Ferrellgas Partners ( FGP).


The first of three presidential debates between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney is Wednesday in Denver.


The European team retained the Ryder Cup, topping the U.S. team Sunday in one of the greatest comebacks in Ryder Cup history.
