AT&T Reports Record iPhone Sales

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- AT&T ( T) said the new iPhone 5, which was unveiled in a blaze of publicity last week, is its fastest selling iPhone ever.

In a statement released early Monday, the telecom giant said that its customers ordered more iPhones than any previous model both on its first day of pre-orders on Friday and over the weekend.

AT&T, which touts the nation's largest 4G network, covering 275 million people, said that the iPhone is still available for pre-order on its Web site. The device will be available in AT&T retail stores beginning 8 a.m. local time on Sept. 21.

As expected, demand for the new iPhone has been through the roof. A note on Apple's Web site said the device is available to ship within two to three weeks.

AT&T shares crept up 0.03% to $37.27 in premarket trading on Monday. Apple's stock was up 0.79% at $696.76.
