Mercadolibre Inc. (MELI): Today's Featured Services Winner

Mercadolibre ( MELI) pushed the Services sector higher today making it today's featured services winner. The sector as a whole closed the day up 0.7%. By the end of trading, Mercadolibre rose $4.07 (4.8%) to $88.57 on heavy volume. Throughout the day, one million shares of Mercadolibre exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 587,700 shares. The stock ranged in a price between $84.40-$89.78 after having opened the day at $84.43 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $84.50. Other companies within the Services sector that increased today were: Coast Distribution System ( CRV), up 15.8%, Hollywood Media Corporation ( HOLL), up 15.7%, OfficeMax ( OMX), up 14.6%, and ValueVision Media ( VVTV), up 13.8%.

MercadoLibre, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, hosts online commerce and payments platforms in Latin America. Its services are designed to provide its users with mechanisms to buy, sell, pay for, and collect on e-commerce transactions. Mercadolibre has a market cap of $3.64 billion and is part of the diversified services industry. The company has a P/E ratio of 39.3, equal to the average diversified services industry P/E ratio and above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Shares are up 6.2% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday. Currently there are five analysts that rate Mercadolibre a buy, one analyst rates it a sell, and two rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates Mercadolibre as a buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its impressive record of earnings per share growth, compelling growth in net income, robust revenue growth, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures and notable return on equity. Although no company is perfect, currently we do not see any significant weaknesses which are likely to detract from the generally positive outlook.

On the negative front, Spirit Airlines ( SAVE), down 15.7%, Point.360 ( PTSX), down 13.9%, Fortune Industries ( FFI), down 11.7%, and Spar Group ( SGRP), down 10.5%, were all laggards within the services sector with Chipotle Mexican Grill ( CMG) being today's services sector laggard.

For investors not wanting singular stock exposure, ETFs may be of interest. Investors who are bullish on the services sector could consider iShares Dow Jones US Cons Services ( IYC) while those bearish on the services sector could consider ProShares Ultra Short Consumer Sers ( SCC).
