Matt Turck has been named publisher of Slate, effective September 10. Jacob Weisberg, chairman and editor-in-chief of the Slate Group, announced the appointment today. Turck assumes the role of Slate publisher after serving as vice president of advertising sales and marketing for Slate since 2009. He will be taking the reins from former Slate publisher John Alderman, who has been appointed COO of SocialCode, the social marketing solutions provider specializing in cross-platform advertising and intelligence. SocialCode and Slate are both owned by The Washington Post Company. “There’s no one better suited than Matt Turck to serve as Slate’s new publisher,” said John Alderman. “Matt has done an outstanding job over the past four years, and, in the past six months alone, he’s grown Slate advertising by more than 20 percent all while building a robust new sales and marketing team.” Alderman added, “While I’ve immensely enjoyed my time at Slate and will miss working with this extremely talented group of individuals, I’m confident I’m leaving Slate in great hands.” “I’m honored to now be leading the charge for Slate’s advertising team,” said Matt Turck, the new publisher of Slate. “There is real pride that comes with representing a media brand so creative and intelligent that it elevates the level of discourse in the nation’s daily news conversation. Plus, Slate’s socially-driven, multi-platform programs are among the best opportunities in the marketplace for brands to reach the highly desirable audience of new influentials. I look forward to developing new ways for our current advertisers to engage with our readers, and welcoming new clients into the fold.” “Alderman and Turck are two of the best in the business,” said Jacob Weisberg. “While I’m saddened by John’s departure from Slate, I’m thrilled to welcome Matt to the helm and eagerly anticipating a continuation of the innovative thinking he’s brought to Slate around advertising and marketing.” Prior to joining Slate in 2009, Turck worked at Time Inc., where he served in various roles for nearly 20 years, including associate publisher of Time Magazine and publisher of This Old House. Donald E. Graham, chairman and chief executive officer of The Washington Post Company, said, “We’re very fortunate to have Matt’s and John’s veteran talent within the Company. Matt has already proven to be an outstanding manager at Slate. John was a superb leader at Slate and will be equally strong at SocialCode.” About Slate ( www.slate.com ) Slate is a daily magazine on the Web that offers analysis and commentary about news, politics, culture, business, law, and technology.
