Manitowoc Co Inc Stock Upgraded (MTW)

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Manitowoc (NYSE: MTW) has been upgraded by TheStreet Ratings from hold to buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its impressive record of earnings per share growth, compelling growth in net income, revenue growth, good cash flow from operations and increase in stock price during the past year. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had generally poor debt management on most measures that we evaluated.

Highlights from the ratings report include:
  • MANITOWOC CO reported significant earnings per share improvement in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company has demonstrated a pattern of positive earnings per share growth over the past two years. We feel that this trend should continue. During the past fiscal year, MANITOWOC CO turned its bottom line around by earning $0.21 versus -$0.50 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($0.79 versus $0.21).
  • The net income growth from the same quarter one year ago has significantly exceeded that of the S&P 500 and the Machinery industry. The net income increased by 1474.1% when compared to the same quarter one year prior, rising from $2.70 million to $42.50 million.
  • Despite its growing revenue, the company underperformed as compared with the industry average of 8.9%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly increased by 5.9%. Growth in the company's revenue appears to have helped boost the earnings per share.
  • Net operating cash flow has significantly increased by 123.61% to $8.10 million when compared to the same quarter last year. In addition, MANITOWOC CO has also vastly surpassed the industry average cash flow growth rate of -37.30%.
  • Compared to where it was a year ago today, the stock is now trading at a higher level, reflecting both the market's overall trend during that period and the fact that the company's earnings growth has been robust. The stock's price rise over the last year has driven it to a level which is somewhat expensive compared to the rest of its industry. We feel, however, that other strengths this company displays justify these higher price levels.

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. engages in the design, manufacture, and sale of cranes and related products, and foodservice equipment worldwide. It operates through two segments, Cranes and Related Products, and Foodservice Equipment. The company has a P/E ratio of 36.9, below the average industrial industry P/E ratio of 38.1 and above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Manitowoc has a market cap of $1.61 billion and is part of the industrial goods sector and industrial industry. Shares are up 32.6% year to date as of the close of trading on Tuesday.
