Higher One CARES (Community Action for Resources Education and Service), the community outreach group at Higher One, continues to strengthen ties with the local community through fundraising and outreach efforts focused on youth education and empowerment. Led by long-time partner Junior Achievement, Higher One staff enthusiastically “took over” Columbus Academy elementary school in Fair Haven, Connecticut for a day. Participants immersed K-6 students in real-world lessons about economics, entrepreneurship and civics.

High school juniors and seniors attended an informative session at the New Haven Free Public Library held by Higher One’s Financial Literacy and Consumer Advocacy Manager, Mary Johnson. Here, prospective college students were given a “Money 101” lesson and qualified to enter the Higher One Book Scholarship. This scholarship was awarded to Treva Perry, a senior at James Hillhouse High School.

Other fundraising efforts included the launch of a United Way School Supply Drive for New Haven Public School kindergarten students, a drive which raised over $2,000 for the CT Food Bank, and $1,200 for the Rock to Rock bike ride designed to raise funds for environmental causes.

Higher One CARES was formed by employees at Higher One to help identify opportunities for community involvement and engagement. Though CARES supports a variety of local not-for-profits, its mission is focused on helping build the community based on education, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Higher One was founded in New Haven in 2000 by students, for students and has recently shifted its national headquarters in New Haven to the newly-renovated Winchester Arms Factory. The founders share their passion for community involvement by encouraging employees to make an impact through local efforts that match their interest and by giving each employee one full paid day a year to use as a “Day of Service.” If you have an event or program that aligns itself with the Higher One CARES mission, please forward it to Higher One CARES Communications Directors Shannon Colgary ( scolgary@higherone.com) or Leah Dudley ( ldudley@higherone.com).
