Exelon Corp (EXC): Today's Featured Utilities Winner

Exelon ( EXC) pushed the Utilities sector higher today making it today's featured utilities winner. The sector as a whole closed the day up 1.2%. By the end of trading, Exelon rose 44 cents (1.2%) to $37.59 on light volume. Throughout the day, 3.2 million shares of Exelon exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 6.4 million shares. The stock ranged in a price between $37.16-$37.65 after having opened the day at $37.17 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $37.15. Other companies within the Utilities sector that increased today were: Ocean Power Technologies ( OPTT), up 72.2%, China Hydroelectric Corporation ( CHC), up 23.8%, Delta Natural Gas Company ( DGAS), up 7.1%, and U.S. Geothermal ( HTM), up 4.2%.

Exelon Corporation, a utility services holding company, engages in the generation of electricity in the United States. It generates electricity from nuclear, fossil, hydro, and renewable energy sources. Exelon has a market cap of $31.69 billion and is part of the utilities industry. The company has a P/E ratio of 12.3, equal to the average utilities industry P/E ratio and below the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Shares are down 14.3% year to date as of the close of trading on Tuesday. Currently there are three analysts that rate Exelon a buy, no analysts rate it a sell, and 13 rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates Exelon as a hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its good cash flow from operations and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including feeble growth in the company's earnings per share, deteriorating net income and disappointing return on equity.
