Seacor Holdings Inc Stock Downgraded (CKH)

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Seacor Holdings (NYSE: CKH) has been downgraded by TheStreet Ratings from buy to hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its increase in net income, revenue growth and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including a generally disappointing performance in the stock itself, disappointing return on equity and poor profit margins.

Highlights from the ratings report include:
  • The net income growth from the same quarter one year ago has significantly exceeded that of the S&P 500 and the Energy Equipment & Services industry. The net income increased by 226.7% when compared to the same quarter one year prior, rising from $11.17 million to $36.49 million.
  • Despite its growing revenue, the company underperformed as compared with the industry average of 14.2%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues rose by 13.7%. Growth in the company's revenue appears to have helped boost the earnings per share.
  • Despite currently having a low debt-to-equity ratio of 0.55, it is higher than that of the industry average, inferring that management of debt levels may need to be evaluated further. Despite the fact that CKH's debt-to-equity ratio is mixed in its results, the company's quick ratio of 2.09 is high and demonstrates strong liquidity.
  • CKH has underperformed the S&P 500 Index, declining 10.90% from its price level of one year ago. Looking ahead, other than the push or pull of the broad market, we do not see anything in the company's numbers that may help reverse the decline experienced over the past 12 months. Despite the past decline, the stock is still selling for more than most others in its industry.
  • Return on equity has greatly decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a signal of major weakness within the corporation. Compared to other companies in the Energy Equipment & Services industry and the overall market, SEACOR HOLDINGS INC's return on equity significantly trails that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.
.

SEACOR Holdings Inc. owns, operates, invests in, and markets equipment primarily in offshore oil and gas, industrial aviation, and inland and coastal marine transportation industries worldwide. The company has a P/E ratio of 41.1, above the average transportation industry P/E ratio of 28.1 and above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Seacor has a market cap of $1.87 billion and is part of the services sector and transportation industry. Shares are down 2.3% year to date as of the close of trading on Tuesday.
