MeadWestvaco Corporation (NYSE: MWV), a global leader in packaging and packaging solutions , today announced that it will offer free blood pressure checks to all its Richmond headquarters-based employees during the month of May as part of the "Million Hearts™ VA" campaign. MWV is the first company in the Commonwealth to support the campaign sponsored by State Health Commissioner Karen Remley, MD. The commissioner recently pledged Virginia's support for the national Million Hearts campaign by agreeing to conduct one million blood pressure checks during the month of May. The national initiative, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, established a goal of preventing one million heart attacks and strokes in the U.S. over the next five years. As part of Million Hearts, MWV will offer free blood pressure checks to its Richmond headquarters-based employees during the month of May. The company will also conduct an educational employee event at the end of the month to celebrate both the blood pressure checks and the importance of active employee participation in preventative healthcare, including seeking appropriate medical care, keeping blood pressure under control, and adhering to prescribed medication as directed. In addition to several employee wellness programs, MWV has a healthcare packaging business that is committed to improving patient adherence, reducing medication errors and enhancing the efficiency of healthcare delivery not only in Virginia, but in the U.S., and around the world. “MWV recognizes the Commissioner’s warning that Americans suffer more than two million heart attacks and strokes each year, and we are pleased to support her effort to conduct one million blood pressure checks this month,” said Bruce V. Thomas, senior vice president and president, MWV Healthcare. “In addition to offering free blood pressure checks, MWV will continue to educate our employees on the importance of patient medication adherence, which is critical when it comes to managing chronic disease such as hypertension. We are dedicated to improving health outcomes through innovative product design and public‐private health policy engagement, and we’re proud to support Million Hearts.”
In the context of chronic disease, like hypertension, the fact that medication non-adherence leads to unnecessary disease progression and complications, avoidable hospitalizations, premature disability, a lower quality of life, and even death has been clearly established. This is why MWV Healthcare designs packaging solutions to help patients remember to take their medication as directed and manage chronic conditions, like hypertension. “We know from our research that pharmacist counseling is an important and complimentary success factor when implementing proven adherence interventions such as our adherence enhancing packaging,” said Stacy Buchanan, Senior Marketing Manager, Global Healthcare, MWV Healthcare, “and that adherence packaging can play an important role in assisting pharmacists and healthcare providers in enhancing quality of care.”About MWV MeadWestvaco Corporation (NYSE: MWV), provides innovative packaging solutions to protect and enhance many of the world’s most-admired brands in the healthcare, beauty and personal care, food, beverage, home and garden, and tobacco industries - with leading positions in Specialty Chemicals, and Community Development and Land Management.
