eBay, Gilead Sciences: S&P Gainers

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- eBay ( EBAY) and Gilead Sciences ( GILD) were the two best-performing stocks in the S&P 500 on Thursday.

The S&P 500 fell 8.22 points, or 0.59%, Thursday to 1,376.92.

Shares of eBay rose 13.24% Thursday to $40.62. The online marketplace operator reported after the close on Wednesday first-quarter earnings of $725 million, or 55 cents a share. Analysts, on average, expected 52 cents a share in earnings.

The stock hit a 52-week high Thursday of $41.84. eBay's 52-week low of $26.86 was set on Aug. 19.

eBay shares trade at an estimated price-to-earnings ratio for next year of 15.18X; the average for specialized consumer service companies is 15.31X.

Twenty-four of the 35 analysts who cover eBay rate it at buy; 11 analysts give the stock a hold rating.

TheStreet Ratings gives eBay an A grade with a buy rating and $42.55 price target. The stock has risen 33.93% year to date.

Gilead Sciences shares rose 12.1% to $52.25. The company's hepatitis C test results from the "Electron" study of GS-7977 shows that it has an early-cure rate of 88%.

Gilead Sciences has an estimated price-to-earnings ratio for next year of 12.39X; the average for biotechnology companies is 29.95X. For comparison, Amgen ( AMGN) has a lower forward P/E of 10.01X; Celgene's ( CELG) forward P/E is 14X.

Twenty-six of the 33 analysts who cover Gilead Sciences rated it buy; seven analysts gave the stock a hold rating.

TheStreet Ratings gives Gilead Sciences an A- grade with a buy rating and $57.34 price target. The stock has risen 27.66% year to date.

  • F5 Networks (FFIV): The stock rose 7.87% Thursday to $133.98. The stock has increased 26.25% year to date. TheStreet Ratings gives F5 Networks a B+ grade with a buy rating and $143.39 price target.
  • Peabody Energy (BTU): The stock increased 7.03% Thursday to $30.46. The stock has fallen 8% year to date. TheStreet Ratings gives Peabody Energy a C+ grade and hold rating.
  • Boston Scientific (BSX): The stock rose 5.6% Thursday to $5.85. The stock has increased 9.55% year to date. TheStreet Ratings gives Boston Scientific a C grade and hold rating.
  • Southwest Airlines (LUV): The stock increased 4.31% Thursday to $8.23. The stock has fallen 3.86% year to date. TheStreet Ratings gives Southwest Airlines a B grade with a buy rating and $9.40 price target.
  • Marriott International (MAR): The stock rose 4.28% Thursday to $39.45. The stock has increased 35.24% year to date. TheStreet Ratings gives Marriott International a C grade and hold rating.
  • Goodyear (GT): The stock increased 3.91% Thursday to $11.17. The stock has fallen 21.17% year to date. TheStreet Ratings gives Goodyear a C grade and hold rating.
  • Alpha Natural Resources (ANR): The stock rose 3.83% Thursday to $16.82. The stock has fallen 17.67% year to date. TheStreet Ratings gives Alpha Natural Resources a D grade and sell rating.
  • Travelers (TRV): The stock increased 3.75% Thursday to $61.70. The stock has risen 4.28% year to date. TheStreet Ratings gives Travelers a B grade with a buy rating and $68.96 price target.
