Robert J. Dow Joins Graystone Consulting, A Business Of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney

Graystone Consulting, a business of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, announced today that Robert J. Dow, CIMA, Executive Director, has joined one of the Firm’s institutionally-focused consulting group teams, headed by Phil C. Shaffer, Managing Director, in Columbus, Ohio. The Shaffer Team has primarily served nonprofits and large family consulting needs for more than 25 years throughout the Central and Southeast regions of the country. Bob will be based in Morgan Stanley’s Private Wealth Management office in Chicago to further expand the existing footprint of Graystone Consulting, as well as partner with Morgan Stanley’s Private Wealth Advisors who provide a range of investment services to ultra-high net worth individuals, families and related institutions

“We are delighted to welcome Bob to Graystone Consulting,” said Marc Brookman, Managing Director. “The Shaffer Team is an industry leader serving Foundations, Endowments and non-profits, and Bob’s extensive experience and multi-disciplined approach to investment and fiduciary services, planned giving and asset servicing will further benefit our clients.”

“I am thrilled to be joining Graystone Consulting and The Shaffer team,” said Dow. “When considering this significant change, I thoroughly analyzed what families and the board members and staff of universities, colleges and other nonprofits will need both today and in the future. Whether it is for traditional investment consulting, investment management or assisting with fiduciary responsibilities, it quickly became clear that Graystone Consulting is the best choice for my clients, offering the strengths of a boutique investment consultant backed by the broad resources and capital markets expertise of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.”

Prior to joining Graystone Consulting, Bob spent 25 years at Northern Trust, where he founded the firm’s first dedicated non-profit advisory business. In his most recent role, Bob served as Managing Director for the Midwest and Northeast Foundation and Institutional Advisors, and managed the practice’s national planned giving and fiduciary trust services. During his tenure at Northern Trust, Bob worked in various roles including Director for the Midwest’s Personal Financial Service’s Wealth Strategy Group and Midwest Director for Institutional Investment Services within Northern Trust Global Investments. He also worked in their Corporate and Institutional business unit and held roles in product development, new business development, valuation consulting and accounting.
