Solar Storm Smacking Earth Right Now

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- A massive solar storm has enveloped the Earth, but you're probably going to be safe.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has said a coronal mass ejection (CME) has engulfed the earth and that it could disrupt technology as it shakes the planet's magnetic field.

According to NASA.gov, a CME is a balloon-shaped burst of solar wind ejected from the sun and the biggest "explosion" in the solar system, as it has power equal to 1 billion hydrogen bombs. NASA says that a CME can trigger major disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere, which contains its magnetic field.

NOAA said that Earth will avoid the strongest storming that could result from a CME and that more potent activity from the sunspot that emitted the current storm could be possible.

It is the largest solar storm to hit in the past five years and is expected to last through Friday, according to The Associated Press.
