NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- The super PAC supporting Mitt Romney made a last-minute dash for cash on Super Tuesday. Restore Our Future spent some $2.8 million on media buys, phone calls and direct mail to oppose Rick Santorum on Tuesday, according to opensecrets.org, as uncertainty lingered around Romney's prospects to win the day.
"Last night we once again produced a series of stunning upsets ... and nearly won in Ohio despite being outspent 12 to 1 by Mitt Romney," Rick Santorum said Wednesday in a statement. "I think this is because Americans are looking for a blue collar, Reagan conservative - not a Massachusetts moderate."
Romney won Ohio, a critical victory for his campaign, by about one percentage point, and won five other states (Alaska, Idaho, Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia) along with at least 212 delegates. By comparison, Winning Our Future, which supports Newt Gingrich, spent $33,169 and Endorse Liberty, a supporter of Ron Paul, spent $19,294. Red, White and Blue Fund, which supports Santorum, didn't spend anything on the day of the primaries. It is likely that Restore Our Future poured most of the Tuesday funds into Ohio as the race there was a statistical dead heat heading to election day. -- Written by Joe Deaux in New York. >Contact by Email. >Follow Joe Deaux on Twitter.
