Valero Energy: S&P Intraday Gainer

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Valero Energy ( VLO) was the best-performing stock in the S&P 500 intraday Wednesday.

The S&P 500 was rising 3.84 points, or 0.29%, to 1,347.20.

Shares of Valero Energy rose 5.56% intraday Wednesday to $26.57. Production at Valero's Memphis oil refinery wasn't halted by a fire on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg. The fire damaged three contractors, Bloomberg noted.

Valero Energy has an estimated price-to-earnings ratio for next year of 5.87 times; the average for exploration and production companies is 15.59. For comparison, both Williams Partners ( WPZ) and Noble Energy ( NBL) have forward P/Es of 16.66 and 11.26, respectively.

Twelve of the 21 analysts who cover Valero Energy rated it buy. Seven analysts gave the stock a hold rating and two rated it sell.

TheStreet Ratings gives Valero Energy a B- grade with a buy rating and $30.17 price target. The stock has risen 26.65% year to date.
