NEW YORK ( TheStreet -- Don't bother booking a restaurant reservation on Thursday night in New York City before Christmas, because that my friends is mistress night.

It's the night when "misters" take their favorite gal out before Christmas, which of course they spend with their families. It's part of the deal and mistresses know this, but the gals also expect a pretty swanky gift in return for their adoration of their master of the universe.

Now even though the girlfriend may have already said point blank what she wants, a good mister will probably want to surprise her with something extra as well.

AshleyMadison.com, the website for married people looking to date, surveyed their clientele and discovered that on average men spend between $51-$100 on their wives, but when it comes to the mistresses, they spend $251-$500.

Cash is king as these guys are keen to avoid a paper trail. The survey said that 87% pay for their mistress gifts with cash.

So here's a list of mistress gifts to surprise and delight your darling.

Jewelry

This is the no. 1 choice for mistress presents, according to Noel Biderman, founder of AshleyMadison.com. Surprisingly, Biderman says men are more likely to buy diamonds for their mistresses than for their wives.

A little blue box from Tiffany & Co. ( TIF) will always be welcome but there's also the option or go online and shop for diamonds at Blue Nile ( NILE).

If she's one in a million and makes you think you're going to have a heart attack when you see her, stash your cash away for a Van Cleef & Arpels necklace. This is the standout gift for the classic girl. The onyx clover necklace will set you back $4,900 but Bluefly sells a vintage one for $3,100.

Lingerie

Your girl on the side probably spends hundreds on lingerie to look hot for you. Have you helped her out in this department? Do you have any idea how much it costs to look hot? Agent Provocateur runs about $190 for a brassiere or at least $90 for panties and the selection is perfect for your gal if she's the dirty girl-type.

If that's a little too rich for your budget, then Victoria's Secret ( LTD) will do.

Watches

A good watch will go far. Watches are really terrible for pawning so she'll probably keep it. Whenever she wears it, she'll look at it and think of you. That's even better. Tiffany has some spectacular classic styles. She can feel very Audrey Hepburn when she flashes her Tiffany watch. Rose-colored gold watches are hot this holiday. Consider one from newly public Michael Kors ( KORS), it's a reasonable $250.

Handbag

No, not Coach ( COH). That's what her mother will buy for her. You need to shell out the bucks for your babe. Louis Vuitton ( LVMH) is good expensive choice, but make sure it doesn't look like it could be a knock off. She wants people to know it's the real thing, even if your relationship isn't.

How about heading over to Hermes, where even a low-end bag is appreciated. And while you're at Hermes, pick up a scarf. Every gal needs a Hermes scarf. If she's really a classic girl, spring for the H belt -- they start at $496 and go up.

Technology

If she doesn't already have an Apple ( AAPL) iPad, then you can feel safe and spring for that. They start at $499 and go up to $829. You can even have it engraved.

She already has an iPad? Then buy her the ultimate, a Burberry or Chanel cover. Chanel's cover is $1500 but Burberry's is a mere $395.
