NEW YORK ( TheStreet) - Electronic Arts ( ERTS) said it has sold 5 million copies globally of its first-person shooter title Battlefield 3 in its first week, making it the video game publisher's fastest selling game ever. EA is banking that the game will take market share away from category leader Activision's ( ATVI) Call of Duty series, which is set to release its newest title, Modern Warfare 3, in around two weeks. EA attributed high retail sales of Battlefield 3 to strong critical reviews. The game's Xbox 360 version has an 85 rating out of 100 on entertainment review site Metacritic. Last week, Battlefield 3 was hit with technical difficulties following its launch on Oct. 25, as users were kicked off mid-game and experienced difficulties connecting to the game's server. "While some players experienced intermittent disruption of online services due to high volume, internal estimates show that servers and service uptime stabilized to roughly 98.9% throughout the weekend, ensuring that players were connected and enjoying the game," EA said in a statement. Besides Battlefield 3, EA is also slated to release its highly anticipated massive multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic in December. The title will go up against Activision's World of Warcraft franchise. Shares of Electronic Arts fell 3.1% Monday to close at $23.35. -- Written by Olivia Oran in New York. >To follow the writer on Twitter, go to http://twitter.com/Ozoran. >To submit a news tip, send an email to: email@example.com.
