Total SA (TOT): Today's Featured Energy Loser

The energy industry closed the day up 0.8%. Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company Limi ( SHI), Clayton Williams Energy Inc ( CWEI), GeoGlobal Resources Inc ( GGR), and Gulf Island Fabrication Inc ( GIFI) were all decliners today within the energy industry with Total ( TOT) being today's featured energy loser. Total fell $1.17 (-2.1%) to $54.49 on light volume. Throughout the day, 4.3 million shares of Total exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 6.4 million shares.

TOTAL S.A., together with its subsidiaries, operates as an integrated oil and gas company worldwide. The company operates through three segments: Upstream, Downstream, and Chemicals. The Upstream segment engages in the exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas. Total has a market cap of $119.1 billion and is part of the basic materials sector. The company has a P/E ratio of 6.9, below the average energy industry P/E ratio of 7.5 and below the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Shares are up 3.1% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday.

TheStreet Ratings rates Total as a hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its robust revenue growth, impressive record of earnings per share growth and attractive valuation levels. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including poor profit margins and a generally disappointing performance in the stock itself.

On the positive front, Cal Dive International Inc ( DVR), Camac Energy Inc ( CAK), Geokinetics Inc ( GOK), and Longwei Petroleum Investment Holding Limite ( LPH) were all gainers within the energy industry with Schlumberger ( SLB) being today's featured energy industry winner.

For investors not wanting singular stock exposure, ETFs may be of interest. Investors who are bullish on the energy industry could consider Energy Select Sector SPDR ( XLE) while those bearish on the energy industry could consider Proshares Short Oil & Gas ( DDG).
