Southern Co. (NYSE: SO) recorded an increase in profits in the third quarter of 2011.

The energy company, which is the parent of Birmingham-based Alabama Power Co., reported a profit of $916 million for the third quarter 2011, compared to $817 million in the third quarter of 2010.

Southern Co. said its results were positively impacted by regulatory actions at Georgia Power, but negatively affected by relatively cooler weather in September.
