Apple Inc. is getting ready to build a solar power system on 171 acres in North Carolina near a data center, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The newspaper reported that Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has gotten permits from Catawba County for work on the land it owns near its data center there.

Plans reviewed by the Observer cover just excavation and reshaping of the earth on the site, with no details about any solar panels or technology. The size of the likely solar farm isnâ¿¿t known.

Cupertino-based Apple already has solar power running its data centers in Austin, Sacramento and in Cork, Ireland.

Apple hasnâ¿¿t yet applied for the required building permits for this solar project.
