Diversified technology company 3M ( MMM) reported third-quarter profit of $1.52 a share. Analysts, on average, were expecting earnings of $1.61 a share. The company now expects full-year earnings in the range of $5.85 to $5.95 a share, down from the prior expected range of $6.10 to $6.25 a share. Shares were tumbling 5.8% to $77.40.
Communications equipment maker Tellabs ( TLAB) reported third-quarter revenue of $314 million, below the average analyst estimate of $335 million. Shares were tumbling 5.3% to $4.44.
BP ( BP), the U.K. oil giant, earned $4.9 billion in the third quarter, up from $1.8 billion a year earlier, and raised its assets disposal plan related to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster to $45 billion from $30 billion. Shares were advancing 3.3% to $43.20.
Delta Air Lines ( DAL) reported third-quarter earnings of 91 cents a share, missing the average analyst estimate of 93 cents. Shares were falling 2.3% to $8.70.
DuPont ( DD) posted an adjusted profit of 69 cents a share, above analysts' estimates, as net sales jumped 32% to $9.24 billion. It raised the bottom of the range of earnings expectations for 2011. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected DuPont, the chemicals maker, to earn 56 cents a share on revenue of $8.79 billion in the third quarter. Shares were rising 1.4% to $46.75.
United Parcel Service ( UPS) reiterated its full-year earnings outlook to a range of $4.15 to $4.40 a share, after reporting third-quarter earnings of $1.06 a share, which beat the average analyst estimate of $1.05. Shares were slumping 1.4% to $69.89.
Texas Instruments ( TXN) gave an outlook for the current quarter that includes downside to the current consensus view. The chipmaker said it expects earnings of 28 cents to 36 cents a share for its fourth quarter on revenue of $3.26 billion to $3.54 billion. The forecast includes acquisition-related costs of 15 cents a share. The average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters is for a profit of 52 cents a share in the period on revenue of $3.37 billion. Shares were falling 1.4% to $31.24.
Oil well services and equipment company Weatherford ( WFT) reported third-quarter earnings of 26 cents a share, meeting estimates. Shares were rising 1.3% to $15.31.
Drug company Amgen ( AMGN) said that its adjusted net income fell 3% to $1.28 billion in the third quarter from $1.31 billion the same time last year. Adjusted third-quarter profit came in at $1.40 a share, beating the average analyst estimate of $1.29 a share. The company increased its full-year earnings guidance to $5.15 to $5.30 a share.
