The Travelers Companies Inc. Stock Upgraded (TRV)

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- The Travelers Companies (NYSE: TRV) has been upgraded by TheStreet Ratings from hold to buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures, attractive valuation levels and increase in stock price during the past year. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had sub par growth in net income.

Highlights from the ratings report include:
  • TRV's debt-to-equity ratio is very low at 0.26 and is currently below that of the industry average, implying that there has been very successful management of debt levels.
  • After a year of stock price fluctuations, the net result is that TRV's price has not changed very much. Although its weak earnings growth may have played a role in this flat result, don't lose sight of the fact that the performance of the overall market, as measured by the S&P 500 Index, was essentially similar. Turning our attention to the future direction of the stock, it goes without saying that even the best stocks can fall in an overall down market. However, in any other environment, this stock still has good upside potential despite the fact that it has already risen in the past year.
  • TRV, with its decline in revenue, underperformed when compared the industry average of 20.7%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly dropped by 1.1%. Weakness in the company's revenue seems to have hurt the bottom line, decreasing earnings per share.
  • TRAVELERS COS INC has exprienced a steep decline in earnings per share in the most recent quarter in comparison to its performance from the same quarter a year ago. This company has reported somewhat volatile earnings recently. We feel it is likely to report a decline in earnings in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, TRAVELERS COS INC increased its bottom line by earning $6.66 versus $6.39 in the prior year. For the next year, the market is expecting a contraction of 49.7% in earnings ($3.35 versus $6.66).

The Travelers Companies, Inc., through its subsidiaries, provides various commercial and personal property and casualty insurance products and services to businesses, government units, associations, and individuals primarily in the United States. The company has a P/E ratio of 14.3, above the average insurance industry P/E ratio of 10.7 and below the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. The Travelers Companies has a market cap of $22.5 billion and is part of the financial sector and insurance industry. Shares are down 2.1% year to date as of the close of trading on Monday.
