DETROIT TheStreet) -- Chevrolet said the third quarter of 2011 was the best in its 100-year history as it sold 1.2 million vehicles around the world. The biggest General Motors ( GM) brand said its third-quarter global sales rose 13.8%, compared with an overall 3.9% increase for the global automotive industry.
The top growth market for Chevrolet was the Ukraine, where sales rose 71%. In all, Chevrolet posted double-digit third-quarter gains in 20 markets throughout Asia, Europe, North America and South America. Besides Ukraine, the top five markets were Russia, up 64%; Thailand up 58%; South Africa up 51% and Vietnam up 50%. The top European market was France, up 30%. The 19th best market was China, up 18%. The U.S., up 14%, ranked 20th. Perhaps Chevrolet's hottest new product is the Cruze. Worldwide Cruze sales in the third quarter totaled about 175,000 units, primarily in the U.S. and China. More than 970,000 Cruzes have been sold since the car was introduced in early 2009.
