MRIGlobal hit record revenue during its 2011 fiscal year, helped by a surge in contract research work and in revenue for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory that it helps run.

Combined revenue hit $627 million during the fiscal year that ended June 30, according to the Kansas City-based nonprofit research organizationâ¿¿s annual report. Contract research operations brought in $132 million, up almost 18 percent from fiscal 2010. And NREL revenue reached $495 million, a 14 percent jump.

NREL, which is in Golden, Colo., is a U.S. Department of Energy facility that is run by MRIGlobal and nonprofit Battelle Memorial Institute of Columbus, Ohio.

CEO Michael Helmstetter began leading MRIGlobal in October 2009.
