NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. ( NWSA) will pay $3.2 million to the family of the murdered girl whose phone was hacked by News of the World.

The media mogul also will donate $1.6 million to charities chosen by the Dowler family.

News of the World was shuttered in July following reports that reporters hacked the telephone messages of the 11-year-old girl, interfering with the police investigation and leading her family to believe she was still alive.

Since then, several other cases of hacking have emerged in Murdoch's empire and the scandal has forced the resignation of staff members and London officials.
