Wausau Paper Corp. said Wednesday that Thomas Howatt plans to retire as president and CEO at the end of 2011 and that Henry Newell, executive vice president and chief operating officer, will succeed him.

Newell, 54, will assume the top post for the Mosinee-based specialty paper and commercial towel and tissue products manufacturer Jan. 1. Howatt will continue to serve on the company's board and become non-executive chairman Feb. 15, 2012, when the term of current chairman San Orr expires. Orr is retiring, having reached the mandatory retirement age.

Newell has been with Wausau Paper (NYSE: WPP) since 2007, first as vice-president, business development, then as senior vice-president specialty products, a role he was promoted to in January of 2009. Newell then became senior vice-president paper when the company consolidated its specialty products and printing and writing business segments in January of 2010. He assumed his current position in March 2011.
