Average gas prices in the Kansas City area shot up 12 cents a gallon during the past week to $3.33 on Sunday, according to KCGasPrices.com.

By comparison, U.S. gas prices rose 6.3 cents a gallon during the past week to $3.49.

The local increase is even steeper when compared with a year ago â¿¿ prices are up 64 cents a gallon. Theyâ¿¿re up 16.1 cents a gallon from a month ago.

U.S. prices are up 66.3 cents a gallon from a year ago and 12 cents a gallon from a month ago.

⿿Highlighting what I⿿ve reiterated for weeks, we⿿re seeing gasoline prices continue their volatile trend, and this time that trend is upward,⿝ Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com, said in a release. ⿿... I do expect that over the next week, we⿿ll see a continued rise in gasoline prices.⿝
