NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Research In Motion ( RIMM) said it is slowly restoring service to users around the globe after a series of disruptions this week that resulted from a core switch failure in Europe.

These failures then caused a backlog of unsent messages, creating service problems and disruptions for other RIM users around the world, including the U.S. and certain countries in South America, including Brazil and Argentina.

Shares of RIM dropped 1.8% to $23.44 in premarket trading on Thursday.


Sony ( SNE) on Wednesday said it had locked nearly 100,000 user accounts on its PlayStation Network after being hit by a cyber attack. The breach is just the latest to target Sony, which in April was beset by hackers who compromised data like passwords, birth dates and credits from 100 million accounts.


Akamai ( AKAM) shares jumped 3.6% in premarket trading Thursday to $24.20 after rumors surfaced the company was being eyed by Google ( GOOG). However, reports of a potential acquisition of Akamai are baseless, according to Reuters.


Local check-in service Foursquare on Thursday launched a new feature called Radar which sends real-time alerts to people about places or things they might want to visit if they're close by. For example, the new feature will suggest users check into a place nearby if three or more of their friends are present.


Digital advertising start-up MediaMath is said to be exploring raising a venture round as large as $100 million, according to Business Insider. The company has raised around $40 million to date.
