NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Wal-Mart ( WMT) is taking to Facebook to offer localized promotions to its shoppers. The discount giant is launching more than 3,500 Facebook store pages through the "My Local Walmart" application. The app will provide information regarding special offers, rollbacks and new merchandise to customers based on their location. >Wal-Mart: The Next Tech Giant "With early Walmarts, customers would walk in and ask the store manager to get a product," said Stephen Quinn, chief marketing officer of Wal-Mart. "This is going to allow this kind of communication at national scale. Stores become more relevant on a local level because of interaction with customers." This comes as Wal-Mart makes an aggressive push into the social and mobile commerce arena through its @WalmartLabs. Hyper-local shopping has been a growing trend among retailers, especially Internet giants like Amazon ( AMZN) and eBay ( EBAY), companies which Wal-Mart is trying to more closely align itself. - Reported by Jeanine Poggi in New York.
