BEIJING ( TheStreet) -- General Motors ( GM) said it sold 15.3% more cars in China in September than it did the previous year.

GM and its joint venture partners sold 240,244 cars, marking the automaker's second-highest ever sales in China for a single month.

"GM has maintained our momentum in China, with all of our major brands setting new September sales marks," said GM China Group president Kevin Wale, in a statement Monday.

Sales for the first nine months of 2011 were 1.89 million, an increase of 6.6% from a year earlier.
