The international oil rig count for September 2011 was down by 9, and the U.S. count up 21 from last month, according to a report by Houston-based Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI).

International rigs totaled 1,174 in September of this year, an increase of 54 rigs more than those counted during the same period in 2010, which showed 1,120.

Offshore, the international count for September 2011 was 304 rigs, down 14 from 318 in August. The Septemberâ¿¿s figure is also down 13 from September 2010.

The U.S. rig count for September 2011 was 1,978, an increase of 21 rigs above Augustâ¿¿s 1,957. Septemberâ¿¿s number is up 323 rigs from 1,655 a year earlier.

The Canadian rig count for September 2011 was 510 rigs, an increase of 37 from the 473 in August, and an increase of 163 from 347 in September 2010.

Worldwide, the rig count for September of this year was 3,662, an increase of 49 from the 3,613 the previous month, and an increase of 540 from 3,122 counted a year earlier.
