SEOUL, South Korea ( TheStreet) -- Samsung, a day after Apple ( AAPL) unveiled the new iPhone 4S , is seeking to block the sale of the new device in France and Italy.

Samsung is alleging the iPhone 4S infringes its patents on wireless technology. It plans to file preliminary injunctions to prevent the sale of the device but didn't say when the filings would take place.

"Apple has continued to flagrantly violate our intellectual property rights and free ride on our technology, and we will steadfastly protect our intellectual property," Samsung said in a statement.

A spokesman for Apple declined to comment for The Associated Press.

The latest salvo from Samsung ramps up the fight between the two technology giants. Apple has brought a number of suits against Samsung across the globe, claiming Samsung's smartphones and tablets copy Apple's iPhone and iPad.

On Tuesday, Apple rejected Samsung's offer to settle their patent dispute in Australia, meaning it's likely Samsung won't be able to launch its Galaxy 10.1 tablet in that market in time for Christmas.
