The Woodlands-based Newton Energy Partners LLC has acquired all outstanding shares of MEC Operating Company ULC, which owns five oil fields near Edmonton, Alberta.

Among the fields purchased is the Leduc Woodbend field, which is currently producing 2,400 net barrels of oil equivalent per day from about 225 wells on 73,000 acres.

Bud Newton, the companyâ¿¿s president and CEO, said in a news release that Newton plans an aggressive drilling program during the next few years. The company will also pursue other Canadian acquisitions.

Newton was founded in October 2010, by Bud Newton and Houston-based Kayne Anderson Energy Funds. Newtonâ¿¿s Canadian affiliate, NEP Canada ULC, will office in downtown Calgary, Alberta.
